Goodman Mine Locomotives

The Goodman Manufacturing Company began producing mine locomotives in the early 1900's. The factory was located at Halsted Street & 48th Place Chicago, Illinois. The Goodman Mfg. Company specialized in coal cutting machines & electric mine locomotives in the early years of development. Goodman's well known patented design on the early mine locomotives was a single armature geared to both axles.  The concept was to maximize tractive force by keeping all wheels in unison.  The mine locomotive would not lose traction until all wheels lost traction.

The Goodman Mfg. Co. early years specialized in electric traction type and Rack Rail mine locomotives but not storage battery. The demand for battery type locomotives was growing at an all time fast rate and if Goodman did not react quickly the fate of the company would have had a grim outcome.  A company decision was made to not lose the market share and purchased Mancha Storage Battery Locomotives in St. Louis, Missouri. Goodman never changed the Mancha name due to an already strong market share that company had maintained. Combining the traction & storage battery type mine locomotives Goodman was now able to be very competative in the industrial locomotive market.

The Goodman Mfg. Company in later years changed it's name to the Goodman Equipment Company as the vast product lines increased for material handling.
