Jeffrey Mine Locomotive (5 ton trolley type)
Restoration of Jeffrey Mine Locomotive (5 ton trolley type)
Below is one of our completed mine equipment restorations.
The Jeffrey Mine locomotive was built 12-15-1921 & weighs approximately 5 tons. Ohio Vintage Coal Co. aquired this locomotive from a one man coal mine operation located in Eastern Ohio. It was used at this mine to bring loaded coal cars out to the tipple & empty them into trucks to supply businesses / homes lump coal for heating during the cold months.
The locomotive is a trolley type meaning that there is a pole that slides on an overhead wire (250 volt D.C.) to supply the needed electricty for the motors. This particular mine locomotive was also equipped with a cable reel. This device allowed the miners to mine in workings off the main haulage route underground without having to install overhead wires. The reel is basically like a long electric extension cord that would clip on the overhead wire located on the main haulage line. This allows the mine locomotive to go into side tracks & pick up mine cars to bring them back to the main haulage line.
Ohio Vintage Coal Co. was honored to bring this locomotive to the 2007 National Coal/ Longwall show held in Pittsburg, Pa. The show is hosted by Coal Age Magazine and attracts industry professionals throughout the United States & around the globe.
