Baldwin-Westinghouse 10-ton mine locomotive
Baldwin-Westinghouse 10-ton LOST mine locomotive
On a recent underground tour of the Ohio Valley Coal Company Powhatan #6 mine located in eastern Ohio our members inquired about a surplus mine locomotive. A similar locomotive was in the repair shop requiring a few parts from the surplus unit then the unthinkable happened. The underground miners were changing a few entries within the mine & had to knock down a seal. Behind the seal was this 1918 Baldwin-Westinghouse mine locomotive. The crew retreived this unit & brought it back to the surface to save it. The locomotive was then donated to Ohio Vintage Coal Company by The Ohio Valley Coal Company, Bob Murray & Rob Murray. We thank everyone for their gracious donation, the great crew that helped load & for saving a piece of mining history.
The unique item about this mine locomotive is that it was a high profile locomotive with 33" wheels for increased haulage speed. The locomotive's last assignment was to support the long wall machine moving shields etc. within the mine. We believe that the locomotive was last used in the 80's then sealed in the mine until 2008 (almost 30yrs later).
